Cassique at Kiawah Island Timber Bridge Collection

Bespoke Masterpieces Since 1985

Beautiful Low Country Connections in Kiawah Island, SC Built By York Bridge Concepts

York Bridge Concepts partnered with Kiawah Island Ocean Park to design and construct a collection of custom timber bridges that enhance accessibility, recreation, and the natural beauty of one of the nation's premier coastal resort communities. Located approximately 15 miles south of Charleston, South Carolina, Kiawah Island is internationally recognized for its pristine beaches, world-class golf courses, luxury residences, and commitment to environmental stewardship.

Through YBC's Decero™ Design-Engineer-Build process, the project included three custom timber crossings: a signature 70-foot Cassique bridge, a 50-foot pedestrian bridge, and a 30-foot bicycle bridge. Together, these structures provide seamless connections throughout the community while preserving the island's distinctive coastal character.

Designed to blend naturally into the surrounding landscape, the bridges reflect the craftsmanship, elegance, and environmental sensitivity that define both Kiawah Island and York Bridge Concepts.

A World-Class Coastal Community

Kiawah Island is one of the most celebrated resort destinations in the United States.

The island offers:

  • Championship golf courses
  • Luxury residential communities
  • Resort accommodations
  • Nature preserves
  • Miles of beaches
  • Extensive trail systems
  • Wildlife habitats
  • Recreational amenities

Because of its commitment to preserving the natural environment, infrastructure throughout the island must be carefully designed to complement the surrounding landscape while providing exceptional functionality.

York Bridge Concepts developed a bridge collection that supports this vision while enhancing mobility throughout the community.

Three Bridges, One Unified Design Vision

The Cassique project consisted of three separate crossings, each designed to serve a specific purpose while maintaining a consistent architectural character.

Cassique Signature Bridge

70-foot timber crossing

Pedestrian Bridge

50-foot pedestrian connection

Bicycle Bridge

30-foot bicycle crossing

Together, these structures create a cohesive transportation network that supports residents, guests, golfers, cyclists, and pedestrians throughout the community.

The Signature Cassique Bridge

The centerpiece of the project is the 70-foot Cassique Bridge, which serves as both a functional crossing and a visual landmark within the development.

Its elegant proportions, custom detailing, and natural timber construction reflect the high standards of design expected throughout Kiawah Island.

The bridge was carefully designed to:

  • Enhance scenic views
  • Preserve the surrounding environment
  • Complement nearby architecture
  • Provide safe and comfortable access
  • Create a memorable crossing experience

The result is a structure that feels fully integrated into its coastal surroundings.

Designed for the Coastal Environment

Building on a barrier island requires careful consideration of environmental conditions.

The bridges at Cassique were designed to withstand:

  • Coastal humidity
  • Salt-air exposure
  • Seasonal storms
  • Fluctuating water levels
  • Heavy recreational use

Through proper engineering, material selection, and protective finishes, York Bridge Concepts delivered structures built to perform in one of the country's most demanding coastal environments.

Sustainable Design and Environmental Stewardship

Kiawah Island has long been recognized for its commitment to environmental preservation.

The bridge collection supports this mission through:

Timber Construction

Renewable timber materials help reduce the environmental footprint of the project while creating a natural aesthetic.

Minimal Site Disturbance

Pile-supported construction reduces impacts on sensitive landscapes and water features.

Habitat Preservation

The bridge designs allow surrounding ecosystems to remain intact while providing improved connectivity.

Long-Term Durability

Structures designed for longevity reduce future material consumption and maintenance requirements.

These principles align closely with both Kiawah Island's environmental goals and York Bridge Concepts' commitment to responsible construction practices.

Architectural Features

The bridges incorporate a variety of custom design elements that enhance their appearance and functionality.

Cassique Series Hand Rail

The signature Cassique Series railing system creates a refined appearance while providing safety and durability.

Natural Timber Character

Southern Yellow Pine provides warmth, texture, and visual appeal that complement the island setting.

Site-Specific Design

Each bridge was tailored to its unique location while maintaining a cohesive architectural language throughout the community.

Timeless Coastal Aesthetic

The bridges reflect the elegance and understated sophistication associated with Kiawah Island.

Pile-Supported Construction

All three bridges utilize pile-supported structural systems designed to accommodate the island's environmental conditions.

Benefits of this approach include:

  • Reduced environmental impacts
  • Improved structural stability
  • Adaptability to varying site conditions
  • Long-term durability
  • Efficient installation

This construction method allows the bridges to function harmoniously with the surrounding landscape and water features.
