Ave Maria University Pedestrian Bridge

Bespoke Masterpieces Since 1985

Connecting A University in Ave Maria, FL Built By York Bridge Concepts

York Bridge Concepts proudly partnered with Ave Maria University to design and construct a signature pedestrian bridge that enhances campus connectivity while serving as an architectural landmark for students, faculty, and visitors. Located approximately 17 miles east of Naples, Florida, the university sought a bridge solution that would complement its beautiful campus setting while providing safe and accessible pedestrian access across Lake #7.

Developed through York Bridge Concepts' Decero™ Design-Engineer-Build process, the 182-foot timber pedestrian bridge combines engineering excellence, timeless aesthetics, and long-term durability. The structure serves as both a functional crossing and a memorable campus feature, reflecting the university's commitment to creating an exceptional educational environment.

With its warm, natural color palette, elegant timber detailing, and distinctive architectural picket rail system, the bridge seamlessly integrates into the surrounding landscape while creating a welcoming experience for everyone who crosses it.

A Landmark Gateway on Campus

Universities are defined not only by their buildings and academic programs but also by the spaces that connect students to one another and to the campus experience.

The Ave Maria University Pedestrian Bridge was designed to become one of those defining spaces.

Spanning 182 feet across Lake #7, the bridge provides an important connection within the campus while offering beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. The structure encourages walking, supports accessibility, and creates opportunities for students and visitors to engage with the natural environment that surrounds the university.

Its prominent location and distinctive appearance have made it an instantly recognizable feature of the campus.

Designed Through the Decero™ Process

Every York Bridge Concepts project begins with a blank sheet of paper and a commitment to understanding the unique needs of the client.

Through the Decero™ Design-Engineer-Build process, the team developed a bridge solution that addressed:

  • Campus circulation needs
  • Accessibility requirements
  • Architectural compatibility
  • Environmental conditions
  • Long-term durability objectives
  • User experience considerations

This customized approach ensured that the finished bridge became a seamless extension of the university's campus rather than simply a means of crossing the water.

Architectural Character Meets Performance

The Ave Maria University bridge combines structural performance with thoughtful architectural detailing.

Warm Natural Aesthetics

The bridge features rich timber finishes and earthy tones that complement the Florida landscape and surrounding campus architecture.

Architectural Picket Rail System

Custom metal pickets create a visually distinctive railing design while maintaining safety and durability.

Splinter-Free Timber Handrails

Elegant 42-inch timber handrails provide a comfortable and user-friendly experience for pedestrians.

Elevated Campus Experience

The bridge's length and scale create a dramatic crossing experience while offering expansive views of Lake #7 and the surrounding campus environment.

Together, these elements transform a functional crossing into a memorable destination.

Built for Students, Faculty, and Visitors

The pedestrian bridge was designed to support daily campus life while creating a welcoming atmosphere for everyone who visits Ave Maria University.

Benefits of the structure include:

  • Improved pedestrian circulation
  • Enhanced campus connectivity
  • Increased accessibility
  • Safe and comfortable crossings
  • Attractive gathering and viewing opportunities
  • Long-term durability with minimal maintenance requirements

As a result, the bridge has become an important part of the university experience.

Sustainable Timber Construction

Timber bridges continue to be a preferred solution for educational campuses because they combine sustainability with beauty and performance.

The Ave Maria University bridge utilizes Southern Yellow Pine, a renewable building material known for its strength, durability, and natural appearance.

Benefits of timber construction include:

  • Renewable material sourcing
  • Lower embodied carbon than many traditional materials
  • Natural aesthetic appeal
  • Design flexibility
  • Long service life when properly maintained

These characteristics make timber an ideal choice for campus environments where appearance, performance, and sustainability are equally important.
