Cumming City Center Boardwalk Project

A Natural Connection in the Heart of Georgia

In the heart of Forsyth County lies the Cumming City Center--a thriving hub for community, culture, and connection. At the center of it all is a 2,656-foot long timber boardwalk built by York Bridge Concepts (YBC)--a sustainable structure that threads through protected wetlands, linking residents and visitors to a concert pavilion, boutique shops, local eateries, greenspaces, and waterfront views.

This extensive boardwalk, constructed with 100PSF live load capacity and featuring distinctive bump-out piers, isn't just a way to get from point A to B--it's an immersive experience that enhances the City Center's vibrant atmosphere. With warm timber underfoot, custom wire mesh handrails, and integrated lighting, the Cumming City boardwalk comes alive day and night as a living part of the city's fabric.

Design Meets Preservation: Building Above Wetlands with Purpose

One of the standout features of the Cumming City boardwalk is the environmentally sensitive location it occupies. The winding boardwalk traverses stretches of protected wetlands, an ecosystem vital to the area's environmental health.

Rather than disrupt the ecosystem with invasive excavation or heavy ground-level equipment, YBC deployed its signature Deck-Level™ Construction method--an approach that builds from above the deck instead of from ground. This technique minimizes the ecological footprint by eliminating the need to drive equipment or pour concrete into the wetland soil. Instead, prefabricated components are placed using top-down methods, preserving the plant life, water channels, and soil structure beneath the boardwalk.

The innovative approach allows the boardwalk to rest lightly on the land, offering a model of how development and conservation can exist in harmony.

Deck-Level™ Construction: Top-Down Innovation for Environmentally Sensitive Zones

At the core of YBC's construction philosophy is Deck-Level™ Construction, a method that's revolutionizing how infrastructure is built in ecologically vulnerable areas. Traditional boardwalk construction can involve invasive excavation, heavy equipment, and disruption of the natural terrain.

Deck-Level construction flips that approach--literally--by starting from the top. Support piles are driven with minimal impact, and framing components are installed from above the deck surface rather than on the ground. This technique was essential in Cumming, where preservation of wetland flora and fauna was a non-negotiable priority.

Benefits of Deck-Level™ Construction:

  • Eliminates damage to root systems and soil compaction
  • Maintains the natural water flow through wetlands
  • Reduces construction timelines by improving logistical efficiency
  • Creates safe access for construction teams with minimal disturbance

By adopting this method, YBC not only protected the landscape--it honored the City's vision for sustainable, long-lasting infrastructure that celebrates the land rather than conquers it.

Lighting the Way: A Boardwalk that Transforms at Night

One of the most striking features of the boardwalk is the way it transitions from day to night. With integrated lighting systems built directly into the railings and walking surfaces, the boardwalk becomes an entirely different experience after sunset.

Soft, energy-efficient lighting illuminates the path, highlighting the grain of the wood and the shimmering reflections from the wetlands below It's an ambiance that invites evening walks, late-night concerts, and a safe, scenic commute home from downtown restaurants.

This kind of detail-oriented design--where aesthetics meet functionality--underscores YBC's role as more than a builder. We're bridge-makers, experience-shapers, and stewards of sustainable infrastructure.

A Long-Term Investment in Sustainable Infrastructure

By choosing York Bridge Concepts, the City of Cumming has made a strategic investment in infrastructure that's built to last. Timber, when designed and protected properly, outperforms expectations and contributes to carbon sequestration, making it an eco-conscious alternative.

Each board foot of Southern Yellow Pine contributes to long-term CO2 capture, while the light footprint of Deck-Level construction avoids the environmental cost of large-scale excavation and material-intensive construction.

Moreover, every element of the boardwalk--from the framing to the fasteners--has been selected to endure the climate conditions of northern Georgia, ensuring the Cumming City boardwalk will serve generations to come.
