Lakeshore Foundation Pedestrian Bridge

An Accessible Connection To Wellness & Nature

At the heart of Birmingham, Alabama's Lakeshore Foundation campus lies a transformative outdoor experience made more accessible and inspiring by York Bridge Concepts. Through the design and construction of the Lakeshore Foundation Pedestrian Bridge & Elevated Boardwalk, YBC has enhanced the campus' natural environment, connecting a meandering trail system with a contemplative garden--a space designed for quiet reflection, healing, and inclusive community engagement.

This project illustrates how purposeful infrastructure can do more than bridge two physical spaces--it can bridge wellness, accessibility, and the restorative power of nature. With our legacy of sustainable timber bridge design, we proudly delivered a structure that not only supports the mission of the Lakeshore Foundation but elevates it.

New call-to-action

A Mission-Driven Collaboration

The Lakeshore Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering individuals with physical disabilities and chronic health conditions through sport, fitness, and recreation. As part of its mission to create welcoming, inclusive outdoor environments, the foundation developed a series of Outdoor Spaces including trails, fitness areas, gardens, and event lawns.

York Bridge Concepts was entrusted with the challenge of linking the meandering trail system to the contemplative garden, all while preserving the natural landscape, meeting ADA accessibility standards, and integrating seamlessly with the Foundation's broader vision for holistic wellness.

Designing For Accessibility & Serenity

The Decero™ Design Studio design process is YBC's proprietary, ground-up approach to custom timber infrastructure. For Lakeshore Foundation, this meant carefully analyzing the site's topography, trail alignments, tree canopies and natural drainage to ensure the final boardwalk and bridge structure enhanced the environment--never imposing on it.

Key design considerations included:

  • ADA-Compliant Slope & Widths: Ensuring individuals using wheelchairs or mobility aids could easily access the contemplative garden.
  • Minimal Disturbance: Preserving the existing foliage, root systems, and natural ground contours.
  • Natural Integration: Blending the bridge aesthetics with the garden's peaceful atmosphere and surrounding woodland trail.

The result is a pedestrian connection that not only meets practical accessibility standards but invites all visitors to pause, breathe, and reconnect with the outdoors.

Elevated Timber Boardwalk Construction

The project's standout feature is the elevated boardwalk, designed to hover lightly over the forest floor and trail bed, minimizing the impact on sensitive soils and root systems. York Bridge Concepts employed its Deck-Level™ Construction Method, a sustainable top-down approach that avoids disruptive excavation or heavy equipment access to delicate areas.

This method provided several benefits:

Reduced Environmental Footprint

Construction proceeded with minimal disturbance to soil, vegetation, and wildlife habitats.

Precision Installation

Each pier and support was installed from the top down, allowing our team to navigate uneven ground with accuracy and care.

Faster Timeline

The efficient build strategy kept the project on track and open for use on time--ensuring Lakeshore Foundation's Outdoor Spaces remained accessible.

A Bridge Between Wellness & Nature

The Lakeshore Foundation Pedestrian Bridge is more than just a trail connector--it's an international link between movement and mindfulness. As visitors travel the timber boardwalk, they transition from the vibrant energy of the fitness trail to the meditative stillness of the contemplative garden.

With YBC's design, each step along the bridge becomes a moment of reflection:

  • The timber railing design subtly frames views of the tree canopy and trail, creating a calming visual corridor.
  • The anti-slip hardwood decking ensures safe passage even in rainy or humid conditions common to Alabama's climate.
  • The natural wood tones and finishes blend with the landscape, reinforcing a sense of immersion rather than separation from the environment.

This atmosphere supports the Foundation's goals of mental health, emotional well-being, and the integration of therapeutic natural spaces into daily life.
