This case study focuses on the Mandalay Timber Vehicular Bridge in South Florida, a project that exemplifies YBC's commitment to ecological sensitivity and sustainable construction. The Mandalay bridge was constructed to replace a deteriorating structure, with a focus on minimizing the impact on the surrounding wetlands with Johnson Seagrass and mangrove ecosystems.

The Challenge

Environmental Sensitivity

The site presented several environmental challenges, including sensitive wetlands and a rich mangrove ecosystem. The construction area was part of a delicate estuarial environment that required meticulous planning to preserve its ecological balance.

Ecological impact & Mitigation Strategies

Deck-Level Construction

This method was chosen to ensure minimal disruption to the ground and vegetation. It involves assembling large sections of the bridge off-site and carefully placing them from above, avoiding widespread disturbances to the habitat.

Durable Materials

The bridge utilized treated Southern Yellow Pine and Jatoba hardwood. These materials were selected for their durability and resistance to harsh environmental conditions, including saltwater exposure. 

Foundation & Support

The bridge's foundation was constructed using acrylic-coated, wrapped treated timber piles. This coating helps protect the wood from the salt water environment and increases longevity.

Sensitive Area Crossings

Special attention was given to crossing areas that directly impacted the mangroves and estuaries. The project utilized advanced planning techniques to ensure the least possible interference with natural water flow and plant life.

The Mandalay bridge features a repetitive span structure, adding to its aesthetic appeal and structural integrity. The bridge’s design includes the Decero™ Classic Design Series guardrails, contributing to the overall visual harmony with the natural surroundings. The deck-level construction not only facilitates a smoother transition across the bridge but also aligns with the landscape’s natural topography, maintaining scenic views and accessibility.

The Process

Construction Of The Mandalay timber bridge

The project commenced with an extensive design and planning phase, facilitated by YBC's Decero™ design approach, tailored specifically for the Mandalay site. This phase included environmental impact studies to ensure the construction would harmonize with the local ecosystem, particularly the mangroves and estuaries.

Materials were prepared off-site to minimize environmental disruption. The Southern Yellow Pine underwent treatment with environmentally friendly preservatives to enhance durability and resist environmental decay, especially from saltwater exposure. The Jatoba hardwood was chosen for it's natural qualities that withstand decay, insects, and UV rays.

The actual construction utilized our proprietary deck-level approach. This innovative technique involves assembling large sections of the bridge on-site and then installing them directly into place using heavy equipment, significantly reducing the impact on the ground and surrounding vegetation. This method also expedited the construction process and reduced the overall carbon footprint of the project.

Throughout the construction, a third-party implemented continuous monitoring to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and to adjust practices as necessary to mitigate any unforeseen impacts on the ecosystem.

This meticulous process not only ensured the structural integrity of the bridge but also preserved the ecological integrity of the mangrove and estuarial environments.
