A Bridge That Connects More Than Land
The Legacy Series Vehicular & Pedestrian Bridge at Church of the King | Mandeville, Louisiana
In the heart of Mandeville, Louisiana, a growing congregation needed more than just infrastructure--they needed connection. For Church of the King, one of the region's most prominent and dynamic faith communities, expansion required more than additional square footage. It demanded access. That's where York Bridge Concepts stepped in.
To support their campus development, Church of the King partnered with York Bridge Concepts to design and construct a Legacy Series repetitive-span, double-lane vehicular bridge with an attached pedestrian walkway. This project wasn't just about function--it was about enhancing safety, embracing the environment, and reinforcing the spiritual and communal mission of the church.
The Challenge: Expanding Access In A Sensitive Setting
As Church of the King prepared for its next phase of campus development, a critical piece of infrastructure was needed to support the growing flow of congregants, staff, and service vehicles. The church's master plan included facilities on both sides of a naturally low-lying area. In order to unify the campus and maintain the serene beauty of the Louisiana landscape, any crossing solution had to be:
- Structurally sound for two-lane vehicular traffic
- Safe and accessible for pedestrians of all ages
- Aesthetically aligned with the peaceful setting
- Built with minimal environmental impact
- Durable and easy to maintain over time
York Bridge Concepts' Legacy Series was the ideal match for the vision.
Why The Legacy?
The Legacy Series by York Bridge Concepts is a time-tested bridge design known for its durability, elegance, and environmental sensitivity. This series is frequently selected by civic organizations, municipalities, and private campuses for its elevated design and long-lasting performance in demanding climates--especially those like southern Louisiana, where humidity, water management, and soil stability must all be factored in.
The Legacy Series incorporates:
- Acrylic coated pressure treated Southern Yellow Pine super structure for maximum longevity.
- Integrated railings and coatings to enhance protection and aesthetics
- Custom load design to accommodate daily traffic and emergency vehicle access
- Built-in features for attached pedestrian use without the need for a separate crossing
For Church of the King, this design would allow both cars and pedestrians to cross comfortably while enhancing the visual harmony of their spiritually-focused campus.
Design & Engineering: Built to Serve
From the earliest stages, the York Bridge Concepts team worked closely with the church's facilities management and development teams to understand traffic flow, community patterns, and future expansion plans. Our Decero™ Design Studio process provided the Church of the King with a fully customized solution--not a prefabricated template.
Key features of the design included:
Double-Lane Vehicular Load Capacity
The bridge was engineered to meet AASHTO HS-20 standards, ensuring it could support everyday vehicles as well as service and emergency equipment.
Attached Pedestrian Section
Thoughtfully designed to allow safe and comfortable foot traffic alongside vehicular movement. Integrated timber railings create a natural visual boundary and offer physical protection.
Repetitive Span Layout
The segmented design maximized stability across the natural terrain, minimizing foundational disturbance to the underlying environment while maintaining structural integrity.
Environmental Considerations
With a top-down construction methodology, the team minimized site disruption, protected vegetation and drainage patterns, and left the natural water flow undisturbed.
Construction Process: Deck-Level, Built Right
York Bridge Concepts utilized its Deck-Level Construction method--also known as top-down construction--to preserve the site's integrity and eliminate the need for heavy machinery disturbing the soft ground or wetland edges.
This process ensured:
- Reduced impact on soil and vegetation
- Better stormwater flow and natural drainage preservation
- Minimal excavation, preserving the site's natural character
- Quicker construction times with fewer delays from weather or terrain
The end result was not only structurally sound--it was a seamless integration of form and function with minimal footprint.
Aesthetic Enhancements: more Than A Bridge
York Bridge Concepts understands that bridges are not just about getting from one place to another--they're about the experience of crossing. That philosophy was central to the Church of the King project.
To enhance both appearance and longevity, this Legacy Series bridge includes:
Rich Acrylic Based Finishes
Hand-applied to each timber component for added weather resistance and a warn, natural tone that complements the surrounding greenery and buildings.
Legacy Trim Package
Featuring architectural detailing around railing posts, beam ends, and fascia boards to elevate the structure's appearance while aligning with the church's commitment to excellence.
Integrated Pedestrian Safety
The pedestrian section includes timber picket railings with a top rail, providing stability and confidence for users of all ages--whether walking to Sunday service or enjoying a campus stroll.
Long-Term Value: Function, Form, & Faith
The bridge at Church of the King has quickly become more than a piece of infrastructure--it's a vital artery of the campus, symbolically and practically connecting worshippers, volunteers, and ministries.
Benefits Realized:
Unified Campus Flow
Congregants no longer need to navigate around the landscape to reach different buildings. The bridge provides a natural, efficient route across the entire church campus.
Improved Safety
Dedicated pedestrian access separates foot traffic from vehicles, reducing potential risk--especially during large gatherings and events.
Durability In The Gulf Climate
Timber treated and coated to resist rot, mold, and UV degradation stands up to Louisiana's moisture-heavy environment better than untreated alternatives.
Lower Lifecycle Cost
With minimal maintenance and a design that reduces the likelihood of water damage or erosion, the bridge is a long-term investment in both infrastructure and peace of mind.
